The lower section of Stoney Creek - from the highway and CN crossing to the confluence with the Nechako River, is fairly low gradient and slow flowing. Since the early 2020's, nutrient loading from upstream, and lack of water flow from the effects of regional drought, caused this bloom of emergent vegetation. This stream is an important salmon and trout bearing stream.

In 2023, beavers moved back into the lower reach and started damming part of lower Stoney Creek. This damming activity is critically important to help hold water back and support fish habitat.
