Welcome!

The Nechako Environment and Stewardship Society (NEWSS) facilitates and conducts stream rehabilitation work within sub-basins of the Nechako watershed, where the residents, land owners and various partners can voluntarily improve land and water and incorporate stewardship practices.

Why Stream Rehabilitation

Stream rehabilitation is a long-term investment into land and water health. There are some rehabilitation practices that yield improvements immediately (fixed culvert), to ones that take a decade or more (riparian regrowth). To get a sense of how improvements happen and to understand why NEWSS undertakes this work, review our ‘Before and After’ images.

Beaver Dam Analogues (BDA)

Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs) are human-made structures designed to mimic the form and function of natural beaver dams to restore wetland habitat. BDAs have proven to be an effective stream restoration method to support water regulation and storage that raises the water table, and holds back water to help defend against drought, flooding, and wildfire.

Landowner Stewardship

NEWSS rehabilitation projects have shown improvements to agriculture lands and livestock watering systems, and to fish and wildlife habitat. In each case, on-farm collaboration by the landowner has proven to be a huge part of the success of these stewardship projects.
